Work-in-Progress talk: “‘Change in the Winds’: Native American Self-Determination and Human Rights During the Carter Administration”

March 7, 2025
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

OHC Conference Room (159 PLC)

Jennifer O’Neal, Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies, and 2024–25 OHC Faculty Research Fellow.

Between 1975-1980, after major public takeovers of the Red Power movement, Native American activism shifted significantly from a domestic agenda to an international Indigenous initiative in the fight for sovereignty, self-determination, and human rights. My project explores how Native American activists and organizations, namely the National Congress of the American Indian and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, utilized international human rights frameworks like the Helsinki Accords to bring attention to the human rights violations against Native Americans and influence emerging policies during the Carter Administration.
